[ezcol_1half] IMG_6098
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end] Arneis is a mutation variety from Nebbiolo. Vietti winery started planted this variety from 1967, and now they produce around 10000 cases Roero Arneis DOCG per year. The "glass bottling" history of Italy is not very long, according to the document records, the 1st glass bottled wine in Italy is in 1850. Before 1850, Italian people always bought wines with their jars. Vietti winery had their first glass bottled wine in 1873, and now they produces around 20000 cases per year.

This Reoro Arneis DOCG takes 30 minutes breathing to reach its peak. Grass garden, flower note, peach, green apple, gravel mineral, and mangosteen are in the medium nose. The palate intensity is medium+, with high acidity and medium+ body. Slightly chewy mouthfeel.

SY Rating: 16.5/20

Vietti 2011 Barbera d'Alba DOC "Tre Vigne"

[ezcol_1half] IMG_6100
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end] The grapes for making this wine are from the vines on Barolo vineyard. Luca Currado said they bought the wrong the vines, but I am not sure he's just kidding or it's true. The vines are around 35~40 yrs old. To improve the quality, Vietti only keeps 3~4 bunches grapes per vine.

Black cherry, black pepper, chili pepper, violet, perfume, light cream, clove, and barrel, and mineral. The intensity of nose and palate is medium+. Medium tannin, and medium+ acidity.

SY Rating: 16.5/20

During veraison stage, the leaves of Barbera will change color from green to red, but the Nebbiolo leaves will change from green to yellow.

Vietti 2009 Barbera d'Asti DOCG Superiore Nizza "La Crena"

[ezcol_1half] IMG_6104
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end] The vines were planted in 1932 and 1935, about 75 years. Darker, denser and more powerful than Barbera d'Alba. Plum, black berry, wet soil, cinnamon, cream, chocolate, oak, flower, mineral, bread, and honey. High tannin, high intensity in palate and nose.

SY Rating: 17.5/20

Barbera d'Asti is DOC from 1970, and is DOCG from 2008.
"Nizza" means "nice".

Vietti 2010 Langhe Nebbiolo DOC "Perbacco"

[ezcol_1half] IMG_6106
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end] Luca Currado, the wine maker, said that Vietti winery has plots in Barolo, but they only bottle part of them as single vineyard Barolo wines. Others are blended for bottling normal Barolo DOCG, and the left are bottled as this Langhe Nebbiolo. So, in fact, this Langhe Nebbiolo is a Barolo (Well, less oak maturing process).

Black cherry, cranberry, light cask, light tar, cocoa powder, smoke, garden with grass and some rose petals. High in tannin and acidity.

SY Rating: 17/20

Vietti 2009 Barbaresco DOCG "Masseria"

[ezcol_1half] IMG_6109
[/ezcol_1half] [ezcol_1half_end] Black cherry, straw berry, grass, wet soil, tar, black pepper, incense, chocolate, cream, butter toast, floral, honey note, black tea, and gravel. Truffle shows up after 2 hours.
High tannin and acidity. Very good for now, but aging will give it more improvements. Compare to Barolo "Rocche", this Barbaresco is more "ready" to drink, rich and complex and varied flavors bring lots of enjoyment.

SY Rating: 19/20

One major difference between Barolo and Barbaresco is the soil type. Barolo vineyards have more pebbles and stones, and Barbaresco vineyards are more sandy.
