Les Jardins de Soutard 2004

IMG_5265
Medium garnet color. Medium nose. Mandarin medicine soup at the beginning with a bit dull nose. Quite Matured nose. Licorice powder, light caramel, fresh mushroom, yogurt/milky, and Chinese herbal cough syrup.

Medium+ acidity, medium tannin (velvet), medium body, long length. The nose is a bit lighter than Les Jardins de Soutard 07′ tonight, but sustains longer.

SY Rating: 17/20

Les Jardins (means “Garden”) de Soutard is the 2nd label wine of Chateau Soutard, and the first vintage is 2001. Before 2001, the 2nd label of Chateau Soutard is “Le Clos de la Tonnelle”. Another interesting thing is, Le Clos de la Tonnelle and the first three vintage of Les Jardins de Soutard (2001, 2004, and 2006) only label “Saint Emilion”, and label “Saint Emilion Grand Cru” from 2007.

BTW, in 2004, all grapes were used to produce this 2nd label wine, no “Chateau Soutard” wine in this vintage. Quite a good deal. 😉

Les Jardins de Soutard 2007

IMG_5269
Black cherry, black currant, green nose of eucalyptus leaves and mint, light leather, apple note, and notes of smoked oak. The nose is denser than Les Jardins de Soutard 2004 at the beginning, but does not last long, drops more quickly than 04 vintage.

Medium acidity, medium+ tannin, medium body. Bitterness note at the palate end.
SY Rating: 16/20

Clos Canon 2007

IMG_5271
Very fruity nose. Cranberry, black berry, red apple peel, fresh grass, leather, cocoa powder, sour cherry, wood, and licorice.

Medium+ tannin, medium acidity. Clos Canon 2007 has similar style to Les Jardin de Soutard 2007 in nose and palate, However, Clos Canon has longer length on palate, and has more complexity.

SY Rating: 17/20

Chateau Canon 2006

IMG_5273
Flower, cranberry, prune, black berry, caramel candy note, lemonade note, and orange. The nose is medium+ intensity, but still fruity style.

High tannin and medium+ acidity. Personally think too early to drink, probably enjoy after 2015.

SY Rating: 17.5/20

Chateau Bellevue 2007

IMG_5275
A bit dust nose, chili pepper skin, black pepper, black cherry, metal nose, ink, cinnamon note, and very elegant cedar smell. The nose is not very dense (medium), but shows a elegant style. After 4 hours breathing, shows more distinct wood nose, and a mix aroma of light caramel and mint, just like Chinese cough syrup.

Medium+ tannin and acidity. The shortage of Bellevue is the flavor intensity, not as concentrated as expected.

SY Rating: 17.5/20

Chateau Bellevue is owned by Bouard family, which also owns Chateau Angelus. Seems promising after Angelus’s investment. There is a big portion of Merlot planted on Chateau Bellevue vineyards, and use about 98% Merlot in their wine.

Chateau Figeac 2006

IMG_5277
Black fruits smells, chocolate, caramel, flower, creamy, mint, muscle pain relief paste, and flower. After 4 hours, the herbal nose boosts, like cough syrup.

High acidity and high tannin (velvet). Very similar style to Ch. Bellevue 2007, but more concentrated.

SY Rating: 18.5/20

Chateau Figeac is just next to Cheval Blanc, some wine reviewers consider Figeac is an inexpensive version of Cheval Blanc. 35% C.S. 35% C.F. 30% Merlot, quite a rare variety percentage in St.-Emilion, not that much Merlot.

Chateau Pavie 2004

IMG_5279
Pavie was classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2012 (promoted from Premier Grand Cru Classé B).

Pronounced nose. Herbal honey tea, white pepper, mint, black berry, leather, creamy, grass, oak, flower, and chocolate.

High tannin (velvet) and acidity, and full body. Pepper note on the palate end. Strong and well structure.

SY Rating: 19/20

Chateau Angelus 2004

IMG_5280
Angelus is the other chateau promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé A in 2012.

At the beginning, more fruity nose, and turns into soil and leather and oak mixture smells after 3 hours. Black berry, black currant, cinnamon, black chocolate, unripe stone fruits, leather, soil, licorice, and floral.

Medium+ tannin, high acidity.

SY Rating: 19/20

Befroe 1989, the name of this winery is Chateau L’Angelus. Some rumor said that they eliminated “L” because “A”ngelus will be sorted fore alphabetically.
