At the early beginning, the Veglio family's major business is not wine making, but grew up grapes and sold to large companies or negociants, instead. The only thing concerning is the price and the quantity, not the quality.
From 1992, Mauro changed their business model from a grower to a wine maker, and decided to applying new wine making technologies. Including reduce the yield, reduce maceration duration for less tannin, and use small oak barrels for aging. These changes make their wines more familiar to general wine consumers, and also make Mauro Veglio be a member of "Barolo Boys" camp. 🙂
Barolo Arborina 2003
4 days maceration, 50% new and 50% old barrels for about 2 months malolactic fermentation, and then aging for 2 years.
Medium garnet.
Black cherry, chocolate, oak barrel, acacia bouquet, pomegranate, light chili pepper in nose. After breathing, vanilla, and light rose show up.
Fruity cherry palate, with some chocolate, cinnamon and licorice hints. Although Mauro Veglio applies new style technologies to make wine, the tannin is still high, but not so tart, at least. High acidity. If discarding the high tannin and acidity, this is quite similar to a Bourgogne wine. Very good.
Barolo Arborina 2004
Medium+ garnet.
Caramel, vanilla, plastic glue (decreasing), light bouquet, mushroom, ripe berry, light tobacco and soy sauce pickled squash, oak barrel aroma in medium+ nose.
Black berry, wooden spices, light orange in palate. The tannin is not so matured as 2003 vintage.
Barolo Arborina 2005
Medium+ garnet with light ruby hue.
Concentrated black cherry and violet. Besides, chocolate and light volatility nose (this nose is quite similar to "old style" Barolo). Medium+ nose. After breathing, oak barrels and new leather aromas.
The palate is quite similar to the nose, but the cherry flavor is not so dense, and some dry hawthorn fruit flavor and more spice aromas. Very high tannin.
Barolo Castelletto 2003
The wine making process of Castelletto is the same to Arborina. The only difference of these two series is the vineyard. For Arborina vineyard, located in La Morra, the altitude is about 270 meters. About 1/3 vines of Arboina are planted in 1988, and others are planted in 1970. For Castelletto vineyard, located in Monforte d'Alba, Mauro’s father-in-law owns this vineyard, which he started managing in 1996, the altitude is about 300 meters. About 1/3 of the Castelletto vineyard were planted in 1967 and the remaining vineyard was replanted in 1995 due to the flooding in November of 1994.
Medium garnet.
Medium nose, with volatile smell. Black cherry and light bouquet, with wooden hint. After almost 1 hr breathing, shows light milky chocolate and light caramel.
Medium- body, high tannin (not matured). Chocolate, dry hawthorn fruits and cherry. Medium+ acidity, good lasting length. More similar to Bourgogne than Arborina.
Barolo Castelletto 2004
Medium+ garnet.
Medium nose. Black berry and hazelnut. After almost 1 hr breathing, shows the juicy nose of sugarcane (interesting) on top, and some tar nose at the bottom. After more breathing, light floral nose.
Medium body, high tannin (quite dense on tongue). Black berry, sugarcane, cinnamon and floral aromas. High acidity goes with lingering length, and also licorice and tangerine hints.
Barolo Castelletto 2005
Medium garnet.
Black cherry and light bouquet. With walnut hint. After breathing, chocolate, tobacco, more bouquet, and interesting over-ripe pear hint.
Medium body with high tannin (not matured). Black cherry and cinnamon, and a little bit pickled squash and bouquet flavor.
Barolo Rocche 2005
Rocche series are also mad in the similar way to Arborina and Castelletto. The only difference is the barrel aging step. Rocche are 80% new barrel. The vines are planted in 1985, at the vineyard about 300 meter altitude.
Medium garnet with light ruby rim.
Black berry, dust and gravel. Also some oak hint in medium nose. Light bell pepper. After breathing, shows elegant floral and wooden aromas with chocolate hint, very attractive.
The palate is medium body, with high- tannin (maturing, but not fully). Black berry, smoky, and leather. Light licorice note at the end.
To sum up, Arborina 2003, Castelletto 2004 and Rocche 2005 are the best among these.
