可能是因為自己大多都是自動登入flickr，所以很少見到flickr的首頁，今天發現首頁上頭的照片下方都加上了一句quotation(好吧，可能很久以前就有了我都沒發現)，而今天看到的就是上頭那句"When it's three o'clock in New York, it's still 1938 in London."

這句quotation雖然每個字都看得懂可是完全不明白整個句子的涵義，問了谷歌大神，大多都是找到他人的引用或出處(Bette Midler)而已，看起來這句話是在比較這兩個城市。以我自己的猜測，Bette Midler在1978年時，認為紐約的三點時刻(不曉得是凌晨還是下午，但我覺得應該是指下午)，也只不過像1938年的倫敦而已。(有點認為倫敦比較進步的意味，不太確定)

應該是說倫敦沒有進步還停留在1938年的意思。

根據alkahest的提示，找到了這邊，確實有這樣的翻譯，除此之外還有其他很有趣的英文句子翻譯。

不過在一篇去年的財經新聞報導中也引了這句話，In decline? Not if the bonuses are anything to go by，不過這篇新聞可酸了一下倫敦，"Wall Street was king of all things financial while the City of London was the slightly arthritic, bowler-hatted uncle." XD 此外，這篇新聞的標題用了"go by"這個phrase，實在下得很棒。

Ok, maybe I should check "Oxford Concise Dictionary of Quotations" for the detail background and whole story of that Bette Midler's quotation. :Q
