The history of Te Mata Estate can be traced back to 1896. However, before Michael Morris and John Buck (both wine critics) bought this estate in 1974, Te Mata was not famous in NZ. In 1980 and 1981, Te Mata Awatea won the 1st rank in NZ wine competition, and then it leaped to fame.
